The Sardines we pack in our “Pan do Mar” brand belong to the Sardina pilchardus W. species, “European pilchard”, typical of the northwest coast of the Iberian Peninsula and characterized by the blue and silver belly on its loins.

It is fished by vessels from the fleet of the abundant coastal fishing villages on the Atlantic coast, during one night fishing trips using the traditional method of fence. Compared against industrial trawl fishing methods, this system prevents the capture of dolphins and other protected species, while at the same time significantly reducing discards. It also improves the quality of fish, eliminating the pressure suffered from being pulled in large numbres by the net, and minimizing the time frame between the capture and the processing.
